Objective

The 52 Documentary Series aims to amplify voices from regions where information is scarce or suppressed, offering a platform for inspiring stories of resilience and social change. In 2024, the series features 20 powerful stories from the Global South, with 16 highlighting women who are leading transformative efforts in their communities. From Argentina to Zambia, these women confront systemic injustice, tackle environmental and political obstacles, and navigate personal hardships to make a lasting impact. By sharing these narratives, the series sheds light on the challenges and triumphs of women across the world, helping to broaden viewers' understanding of often unfamiliar realities. It fosters a sense of shared humanity, sparking empathy and connection across cultures, while expanding perspectives—especially for younger generations—by showcasing the diverse ways in which women and communities are challenging the status quo, overcoming adversity, and creating meaningful change.

Documentaries like The Fighting Cooks, On the Spectrum, and Making Armenia Green Again highlight the extraordinary efforts of women who are tackling urgent issues such as food insecurity, disability stigma, environmental degradation, and climate change. The series also amplifies the voices of emerging youth leaders, such as those in Next Gen Voters, where young Indonesians are reshaping political engagement and raising awareness about the mental health impact of social media.

The 52 Documentary Series promotes cross-cultural understanding and advocates for women’s rights, sparking a global conversation about the power of access to information in shaping decisions and inspiring action.

Strategy

Bringing the documentary to life was a multi-faceted process that began with identifying impactful, underrepresented stories of women who are driving social change. Our team’s first step was determining whether the story would resonate with a global audience, align with the editorial direction of the series, and contribute to broader conversations about social justice, empowerment, and transformation. Once the focus on main characters transforming communities was chosen, we worked to map out the key themes and elements required for the documentary to be both compelling and culturally sensitive.

The key challenge in this project was aligning new field producers with our team’s unique workflow and visual storytelling style. Since we often work with local teams for the first time, this required a lot of coordination. We created a structured workflow document to guide them through the process, from story development to final cuts, ensuring that the message of empowerment and change was effectively communicated. This document also allowed us to maintain a consistent narrative style despite logistical challenges.

Additionally, accessing remote areas and capturing the personal stories of women leading change involved building trust within the communities. The emotional depth of their stories—marked by resilience, adversity, and hope—required a delicate balance of empathy and authenticity in our interviews. Working in diverse cultural contexts meant adapting our approach to respect each community's unique values, traditions, and challenges.

The storytelling focused on showcasing these women’s actions and impact, highlighting how they were transforming their communities in meaningful ways. This approach not only engaged audiences but also demonstrated the broader connections between gender, equality, and social justice. Whether in rural villages, urban neighborhoods, or marginalized regions, the stories highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of women to positive social change.

The success of the project was evident in how it resonated globally. Through partnerships with local journalists and producers across 10 countries, we ensured that the documentaries were authentic and culturally accurate. Our distribution strategy leveraged VOA's digital platforms, reaching a global audience and sparking conversations about the role of women in reshaping societies. Over the course of the project, the number of global affiliates partnering with the series increased by more than 250%, amplifying the voices of these remarkable women.

Ultimately, The 52 Documentary Series not only showcased the transformative impact of communities worldwide but also ignited global discussions on how collective action and empowerment can reshape and strengthen communities for the better.

Results

The 52 Documentary Series has experienced phenomenal growth in both its reach and audience engagement. Over two years, the series has expanded its affiliate network by more than 250%, now partnering with over 200 affiliates in more than 80 countries. This has significantly broadened the series' impact. The series is now a leading voice in global storytelling, reaching millions across various platforms, including social media, mobile apps, online streaming, and radio through VOA's own and affiliate platforms.

The series, especially Uncut Future, has made a significant social impact by raising awareness and shifting public discourse. The documentary has helped fuel national conversations in The Gambia about the dangers of FGM and the need for legal reform. By highlighting the activism of local leaders, Uncut Future has empowered those on the frontlines of the fight to end this practice, resulting in increased public support for change. Additionally, The 52 Documentary Series plays a critical role in advocating for women’s rights and social change worldwide. Its focus on issues like food insecurity, disability stigma, environmental justice, and political engagement has inspired global audiences to take action in their own communities.

In 2024, The 52 Documentary Series was named one of the 3 Best Nonfiction Series, including the Gracie Awards, an esteemed honor recognizing excellence in programming created by and for women, and the Online Journalism Awards. This prestigious recognition underscores the series' quality and impact, as well as its ability to engage audiences and inspire social change through powerful, thought-provoking narratives.
