The
Tonawanda Armory, designed by Isaac Perry in 1896, in the Romanesque style, opened
in 1897. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1993. The
40,000 sq. ft. building houses a shooting range, pool, ball room, and many others.
It has recently been restored to its original grandeur. The interior was painted
a neutral almond-green, the woodwork throughout restored, and the gorgeous wood
floors of white oak, pine, and ash have been refurbished after the removal of
the floors. The
glass front cabinets, originally used by the soldiers to store their uniforms,
have also been restored. The chandeliers are original, handcrafted by French Craftsmen.
Originally gas powered, the chandeliers were converted to electric over the years.
The
4 fireplaces are simply works of art. The building has 5 towers with the tallest
tower 100 feet above the ground with a flagpole extending another 75 feet. The
view from the tallest tower allows you a panoramic of the skyline all the way
from Niagara Falls to Downtown Buffalo. Website: http://www.wnyarmory.com |
