The New York City Field Guide

Entered in Video Series

Objective

The NYC Field Guide is a TV series designed to educate and empower New Yorkers.

The series of half-hour episodes follows Micaéla Birmingham exploring our city's unique culture, uncovering opportunities and resources, and providing practical tips for navigating life in the five boroughs. Season 1 spans 13 episodes covering topics such as using public transit, dining out, enrolling children in NYC schools, and resources for older New Yorkers.

The show’s objective is that whether you're a longtime resident, a new arrival or just visiting, The NYC Field Guide serves as a helpful tool to make the most of all that NYC has to offer. The message is clear. We’re not here in the five boroughs merely to survive - we’re here to thrive!

Informative, empowering, and oftentimes humorous, The NYC Field Guide strives to both educate and entertain. The show is a love letter to NYC that celebrates the iconic people and places that make up the fabric of the community that is the greatest city in the world.

Strategy

Next Millennium Productions was approached by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment with the concept to create a television series featuring hacks and tips by everyday New Yorkers, experts and City officials to help navigate life in the five boroughs of New York City.

We tapped into our experience as lifelong New Yorkers to plan each episode, and interviewed our neighbors, community leaders, and friends to showcase the many voices of NYC. We worked to keep each episode both informative and entertaining, finding the right balance between watching something fun and leaving our audience with information that would stick with them. In the edit room, our editors and graphic artists helped stitch together content that would resonate with our fellow New Yorkers.

Filming took place between Fall of 2023 and wrapped in Spring 2024. The show’s premiere was on June 27th, 2024.

Results

The NYC Field Guide was well received by audiences. Our promotions for the show have garnered millions of impressions through, out-of-home, on-line, news coverage and social media. Our flash mob activation event, which featured the viral group Bob’s Dance Shop and was recorded in Times Square to kick off the Season 1 premiere, has garnered nearly 600,000 views on Instagram. Season One to date has reached a total of 46,238 viewers.

Here are some reviews that highlight the show’s impact:

“The feature on Bronx River Alliance is getting a lot of acclaim, and driving park attendance.

The Field Guide is a wonderful addition to the media landscape, and a very useful tool. I look forward to seeing another season!”

"Navigating the vibrant pulse of New York City demands more than just a map; it requires a guide enriched with the collective wisdom of our city agencies and fellow New Yorkers.”

- NYC Parks Deputy Commissioner,
Iris Rodriguez-Rosa

“Micaéla delivers wonderful, useful info that even lifelong NYers need. And it’s fun, clever and hip. This grandma learns stuff each episode and enjoys the process.”
- Barbara, Brooklyn, NY

Season 2 is in the works following the critical and commercial success of Season 1.
