Daily Hate

Objectives

In recent years, there has been an impressive increase in hate crimes in Spain. In this context, FELGTBI+ has been urging various political parties to sign a national pact against hate speeches. To generate pressure for the creation of this pact, FELGTBI+ wanted to involve the public through a petition.

Therefore, our main objective was to carry out an action to raise awareness about the connection between politicians' hate speeches and crimes against the LGBTI+ community, and to get at least 2,000 people to sign in support of the need for a National Pact against hate speeches.

Strategy and Execution

Through data, we found that every time a politician's hate speech appeared on the news, hate crimes against the LGBTI+ community increased in the following days. Essentially, the more hate speech increased, the more hate crimes increased.

Inspired by this, we looked for hate speech and hate crimes that had appeared on the news. With this, we created DAILY HATE: the first newspaper that connected hate crimes against the LGBTI+ community with the hate speech that had triggered those crimes.

We distributed the newspaper on the streets of Madrid and Barcelona on May 17, the International Day Against LGBTphobia, and invited people to sign in order to pressure the government on the need for a National Pact against hate speeches.

Results

We received 6,660 signatures, 4,400 more than our goal.

Reach in a single day: 268,501

Daily Hate was the most talked-about campaign in Spain on May 17 (the International Day Against LGBTphobia).

Some of the most prominent politicians in Spain publicly signed the petition.

But our main achievement came a month after the campaign launch, when Congress approved the creation of a committee to combat hate speeches.
