St. John's Anglican Church, Ridgemount, constructed in 1840 is the original edifice
in Fort Erie. It was built by the mother church, St. Paul's, to serve the rural
population of Bertie Township. The rev. John Anderson, responsible for the enlargement
of the parish, served as rector until 1849. In
1846 the first confirmation of 63 candidates was conducted by Bishop John Strachan.
The first interment was that of Elizabeth Miller in 1841. Two
survivors of the titanic disaster, Madeline Melanger and her daughter, Elizabeth
Mann, rest in the church yard. . |
