The
land upon which St. John's Anglican Church now stands was part of a parcel of
land granted by the Crown in 1803 to Thomas Butler of the Butlers Rangers. This
land was later sold to George Ball, who in 1841 conveyed four acres to Bishop
John Strachan of Toronto in trust for the consideration of five shillings, for
St. John's Church, Jordan. Construction work began in the spring of 1841 and the
building was opened for public worship in May 1842. In
May 1854, the church was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. John Strachan, Bishop of
Toronto. The church, designed by John Howard, is a blend of Gothic Revival with
classic proportions. The floor plan follows the simple "meeting house" arrangements
with no chancel. The altar is centred at the front with the clerk's desk to one
side. The pews and windows on the west front are original, and the organ, built
by the renowned Karl Wilhelm, was installed in 1984. |
