Roselawn is a magnificent stone and brick 1860s Victorian building that serves
as a community arts centre. The facility houses Showboat Festival Theatre and
the Mandolin Orchestra of Niagara, and hosts jazz concerts with internationally-acclaimed
musicians, a Niagara food and wine tasting series, and the Canadian Authors Series.
The
Roselawn Art Committee displays the works of local, as well as regional artists
in the CentreÕs Art Gallery. In 1993, when Roselawn was deemed a cultural and
arts centre, a committee was formed to develop policies and direction regarding
the acquisition of art. A mandate - to ensure that a variety of art work continuously
graces the walls of Roselawn - and an art gallery emerged from this initiative.
In the beginning the art committee sought out the art it would exhibit. As the
gallery grew so did its reputation. Now artists from around the region and beyond
request exhibitions. As a result, the gallery is completely booked until the end
of 2005, and shows are being slotted for the following year. Variety is the appeal
- annual juried shows for both young and mature artists, photography shows, group
shows, solo shows, exhibitions in a variety of media including fabrics and sculptures.
The founders of the art committee could not have imagined the outcome of their
vision when they put together a group of volunteers who have given of their time
to showcase the work of artists, enrich the experience of art lovers and enhance
the beauty of the heritage building known as the Roselawn Centre. All
