Rodman Hall presents a dynamic and diverse year round exhibition program featuring
work of local, regional, national and international artists. It houses a permanent
collection with over 850 works of contemporary and historic art including paintings,
drawings, prints, sculptures and outdoor installations. A public art gallery since
1960, Rodman Hall became part of Brock University in 2003 and is affiliated with
Brock's School of Fine and Performing Arts -- a dynamic link with the academic
arts community at Brock. Rodman
Hall is a unique historic house and property along the Twelve Mile Creek in the
centre of St. Catharines and it is much valued as a cultural landmark by the city
and surrounding Niagara Region. The old house contains the Hansen Gallery, the
board room, art studios and digital art lab, an exhibition catalogue reference
library and administrative offices. Brock University's 4th year Visual Arts Honours
students have turned the 3rd floor, the former servants quarters of the old mansion,
into studios. The modern additions to the building provide the expansive Harris-Godwin
Gallery, as well as collection storage, receiving, and preparation areas.
In
2003 Brock University brought new resources to Rodman Hall, complementing Rodman
Hall's history of volunteer and donor support and securing its future as an art
gallery. Brock University's initiative maintains and enhances Rodman Hall as an
open access community cultural centre, as well as promising a high level of programming
to both the university and non university community. Brock's programme of Continuing
Education takes advantage of the facilities available at Rodman to provide a wide
variety of adult education courses and workshops, ensuring that an ever broader
cross section of the Niagara community finds its way into this rare historic landmark.
The
site of Rodman Hall is the historic Thomas Rodman Merritt house built in 1853
and includes property along the Twelve Mile Creek in the centre of St. Catharines.
It is one of the premier facilities for the visual arts in the Niagara Region,
presenting a dynamic and diverse exhibition program, featuring work of local,
regional, national and international artists. The
facilities include: the Gift Shop, Art Rental shop, art instruction rooms, and
an art reference library. In 1975, the Centre achieved status as a "National Exhibition
Centre" with a major addition to its facilities. |
