Louis
Sullivan (1856-1924)
Louis
Sullivan created the archetype of the modern skyscraper, using narrow piers to
give an upward thrust to the building. Standing at thirteen stories, the Prudential
Building, formerly The Guaranty Building, was one of the first steel-supported,
curtain-walled buildings in the world, and the tallest building in Buffalo at
the time. The ruddy brown terra cotta is richly adorned with lively foliage and
geometric ornament on the piers, spandrels, tympani, columns, and arches.
