| Formed
in 1967 as the Niagara Civic Ballet Company, the Niagara Civic Ballet Company
became a 501 C3 federal status not-for-profit organization in 1999-2000 and became
known as the Greater Niagara Ballet Company. The GNBC provides local dancers the
unique opportunity to partner with professional dancers and play their abilities
in a theatrical setting. Over
the years the GNBC developed a repertoire of over 21 different major ballet productions.
Performances include Degas, Swan Lake and Nutcracker, which is in its 18th year.
Venues include performance centers in Canada and the United States. The
GNBC productions are open to all ballet students by audition and, to date, dancers
from sixteen ballet schools in Western N.Y. and Southern Ontario have participated
in the ballet productions. Guest Artists from internationally known ballet companies
have participated in many of the GNBC ballet performances. The
Greater Niagara Ballet Company presents the Nutcracker: The
Nutcracker, based on a tale by Ernest Hoffman and choreographed by Ivanov to the
music of Tchaikovsky, was first performed before the Czar of Russia in St. Petersburg
in 1892. It was brought to the United States in 1940, where in its various interpretations
has evolved into a beloved holiday classic. Canadian
