At the turn
of the twentieth century, August Esenwein and James A. Johnson enjoyed one of
the most active architectural practices in Buffalo, New York,. Esenwein and Johnson
formed their partnership in 1897 and had offices at 775-793 Ellicott Square. The
immensely successful and versatile firm produced over 1,000 locally iconic designs,
and was selected as one of the eight official architects for the Pan-American
