| Eagle
House Hotel at has been in continuous service for over 150 years as an inn, stage
coach stop, tavern and boasts of holding the oldest hotel license in the state.
It was major stopping point for travelers from Canandaigua and Batavia en route
to Buffalo. Built
by pioneer, Oziel Smith in 1827 when it was nearly completed it burned to the
ground. It was rebuilt in 1832 on the original limestone foundation. Beneath
the Eagle House lie cellar caverns and a passageway leading to the Glen Park quarry.
These caverns are thought to have housed runaway slaves prior to the Civil War.
A
second possible location for Underground Railroad involvement is at nearby 41
South Cayuga Road. This structure, built in 1836, has separate outside cellar
entrances. The Village also has numerous underground tunnels in the area that
are thought to be either related to natural limestone caverns or quarrying activities. |
