Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus

The Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus was organized by Jessamine E. Long in 1937 as the Buffalo Schola Cantorum. In 1992, the Chorus changed its name to Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus to reflect its close association with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Chorus, an independent non-profit organization with more than one hundred auditioned voices, is comprised of skilled and committed singers who continually develop and pursue its tradition of excellence. They appear at various locations throughout Western New York including Artpark, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Museum of Science, Our Lady of Victory Basilica, and the Chautauqua Institution.

Robert Franz, Conductor

Under the baton of resident conductor Robert Franz, the program opens with Wagner's tribute to Goethe in the passionate Overture to Faust. For up-to-date contrast, American Minimalist composer John Adams' Harmonium highlights the poetry of Emily Dickinson and John Donne. Then follows the bucolic majesty of Brahms' Symphony No.3, which Clara Schumann described as "the mysterious charm of forests and woods" Ð an Alpine panorama in glorious orchestral tone.

Defiant Requiem

Perhaps the single most moving concert you will attend this season. Experience the impact of Verdi's soaring Requiem juxtaposed with the story of its performances at the Nazi concentration camp at Terezin. This multimedia event tells the tale of young Czech composer Rafael SchŠcter, who led fellow prisoners in performances of Verdi's Requiem. The emotional message of this performance will linger long after the final Libera me.

One performance only.
