| The
Buffalo City Ballet Company, Inc., was established in 1972 under the name of Buffalo
Inner-City Ballet to provide residents of Western New York with opportunities
to develop skills in classical dance. The
aim of the BICB is to identify and refine the dance talents of young people, especially
people of color through dance instruction and by staging public performances.
The performance aspect of the BICB is under the purview of the Buffalo City Ballet,
our affiliated professional dance company. The
dual functions offered under the auspices of the BICB make it unique among dance
companies in Western New York. Offering ballet instruction based on the syllabus
of the Russian Vaganova / Tarasov method of dance, as well as Jazz and Contemporary
African Dance, the BICB dance school offers classes to community children residing
in the inner city areas of Buffalo. The
majority of these young dancers then take part in productions stage by the Buffalo
City Ballet in the community and region. The Buffalo City Ballet is committed
to show-casing the talents of local performers, particularly highlighting the
talents of minority artists. By
offering competitive employment to its dancers and choreographers, the Buffalo
City Ballet has an important impact on developing and maintaining the viability
of this art form, as well as the overall richness of cultural resources in Western
New York. |
