Fiddler
on the Roof , based on a short story by Sholom Aleichem, was one of the first
musicals to defy the established rules of commercial success. It dealt with serious
issues such as persecution, poverty, and the fight to hold on to one's beliefs
in a hostile and chaotic environment. The
comic and tragic struggle of Tevye, his family and his neighbors to maintain their
precarious balance in a rapidly changing, sometimes hostile, world, the show is
one of the most beloved and honored musicals in the history of American theater.ĘSet
in 1905 Czarist Russia, a time of growing anti-Semitic violence, Fiddler's universal
themes; the need of every person for faith and tradition, for family and community,
for love. It resonates powerfully with audiences all over the world. |
